The girl’s speed at changing her expression was simply astonishing.
Especially that couple — they stared at Su Ci in shock. Who was bullying whom? The person who had been arguing with them confidently a second ago had, in the next moment, suddenly turned into a wronged little white rabbit?
Lu Zhe frowned instinctively. “What happened?”
“These two people aren’t good people. They adopted Little Tiancai with a purpose. I overheard their conversation, and after I exposed them, they flew into a shameful rage and started scolding me,” Su Ci said.
She was beautiful; her fair little face looked bright and lovely under the sunlight, her dark eyes shimmering with moisture. No matter how one looked at her, she was likable. Forget about her being bullied — even if she bullied others, people would subconsciously feel it was reasonable.
“You’re lying.” The middle-aged woman hurried to refute. “What’s wrong with you, young lady? We kindly adopted a child from the orphanage, why would you slander us? What good does ruining a child’s chance do for you? Stop spouting lies with that mouth of yours.”
In any case, the other party had no proof and couldn’t prove anything at all.
The female staff member hadn’t expected something like this to suddenly happen. “Miss Su, what did you hear Mr. Zhang and Mrs. Zhang say?”
Adopters were all investigated beforehand; only those who met the requirements were given the qualification to adopt.
Mr. and Mrs. Zhang had no children, and their financial situation and capabilities were quite good. They did not mind that Zhen Tiancai had a heart condition. This was a rare good opportunity. Seeing that Zhen Tiancai was about to be adopted, the female staff member really didn’t want anything to go wrong.
After all, Zhen Tiancai had a heart condition. If he missed this good chance, it was likely very hard someone else would be willing to adopt him.
Lu Zhe lowered his eyes to look at Su Ci and also asked her, “What did you hear?”
Su Ci directly repeated the middle-aged man’s words. “He said his boss’s daughter has leukemia and needs someone with panda-type blood to donate. And Little Tiancai just happens to have panda-type blood. He’s adopting Little Tiancai to make him save his boss’s daughter, to become a mobile blood bank for her. In exchange, he wants to become general manager.”
Su Ci curled her small mouth disdainfully and continued, “Oh, this woman wants to be the general manager’s wife. After I found them out, they started cursing at me. If you hadn’t shown up, maybe the two of them would’ve tried to lay hands on me.”
The first half was true; the last sentence was false.
If they really dared lay a hand on her, she’d scream for help!
The female staff member looked utterly incredulous. “Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, is what Miss Su said true?”
They were adopting Zhen Tiancai with such a vicious intention?
The middle-aged man and his wife were so provoked by Su Ci’s words that their expressions turned ugly.
“When did we ever try to lay a hand on you?” the middle-aged woman demanded angrily.
Su Ci replied lightly, “Just now.”
Anyway, like they said earlier, words were unproven, and lies relied entirely on one’s mouth. Su Ci felt she excelled at that!
“You—” The middle-aged woman had never met such a sharp-tongued girl, someone who could anger people half to death.
The middle-aged man was much calmer than his wife. He held her hand, signaling her not to speak. “We’re here today to adopt a child, to do a good deed. Now your orphanage creates such a scene, who would dare come adopt the children here in the future?”
His words held an obvious hint of threat. If this continued, the only ones affected would be the orphanage and these children.
“Besides, you slandering us like this, damaging our reputation — do you know I can sue you?” The middle-aged man had many methods.
In his eyes, he had seen many young girls like this — thinking themselves righteous, their heads unclear, believing they were doing good deeds. But once they truly encountered something, they would cower more than anyone.
“I believe her.”
The youth’s cold voice sounded. “It’s very easy to verify whether she’s lying. Just confirm whether your superior’s daughter has leukemia and whether she needs a blood transfusion. Then everything will be clear.”
When Su Ci heard Lu Zhe say he believed her, she immediately shot him a satisfied little look.
The female staff member nodded in agreement. If Miss Su wasn’t lying, then this couple, harboring such malicious intent, absolutely could not adopt Zhen Tiancai.
The middle-aged man’s expression darkened; he refused to admit anything. “So what if my boss’s daughter is sick? That doesn’t mean I want that child to donate blood.”
Compared to the middle-aged couple’s frantic panic, Su Ci looked relaxed aside from the coldness in her eyes. Leaning against Lu Zhe, she teased the couple like she was teasing mice. “Is it that people as black-hearted as you always have particularly thick skin? As long as your skin hasn’t been torn apart, you just keep stubbornly holding on?”
“Watch your mouth.” The middle-aged man’s expression was extremely ugly as he fiercely warned Su Ci.
Su Ci acted as if she were frightened. Her body immediately leaned against Lu Zhe, her eyes pitifully looking at him. “Lu Zhe, he’s being fierce to me, and he even wants to hit me.”
“You—” The middle-aged man was so furious that his temples throbbed.
In the sunlight, hidden within Lu Zhe’s dark eyes was a hint of amusement.
Even knowing the girl was only pretending, his body still shifted forward, standing in front of her and blocking the middle-aged man’s fierce, glaring eyes.
“How do you intend to settle this? If you’re really going to bully us like this, then we’ll leave. We don’t dare take the child anymore. Whoever wants to adopt him can take him.”
Unable to do anything about Su Ci, the middle-aged man addressed the female staff member directly.
The female staff member fell into a dilemma. The child had already packed his belongings and was full of anticipation at having new parents. If they told him now that the couple wouldn’t adopt him, the child would definitely be devastated.
But if what Miss Su said was true, then the child absolutely could not leave with this couple.
The female staff member fell silent.
Watching the couple fuming in anger, Su Ci leaned closer to Lu Zhe and let out a soft laugh. “Alright, I won’t tease you anymore. I can’t appreciate such ugly faces any longer.”
Under the pair’s furious, glaring eyes, Su Ci took out her phone and played the recording from earlier.
Hearing the voices in the recording, the middle-aged couple instantly knew things were bad. How was this little girl so sly, she had actually recorded them.
At first, the couple had assumed the other side had no evidence, which was why they were so calm. Under normal circumstances, anyone with evidence would have taken it out right away. But Su Ci wasn’t like that. She just enjoyed teasing people step by step, peeling away their true faces, and delivering the final fatal blow last.
The recording was very clear, the volume not low — enough for everyone present to hear every word.
The female staff member was filled with anger. “Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, you’ve gone too far. The child is so young and has a heart condition, yet you’re plotting something so vicious. You truly have no conscience at all.”
The middle-aged couple’s faces were both awkward and ugly. No matter how thick their skin was, no matter how shameless they were, being exposed on the spot and slapped in the face like this left them unable to be arrogant anymore.
The middle-aged man began to play the sympathy card. “We were doing this to save someone too. My boss’s daughter needs platelet injections, and panda blood is very rare. The blood bank has very little stock. We saw such a young girl suffering from this illness and about to not make it. We pitied her, so we thought of having Zhen Tiancai donate blood. It’s a good deed — saving a life.”
“Shut up already.” Su Ci was speechless. “Our ears are fine, not deaf. In the recording you said clearly that you wanted to trade Zhen Tiancai for the general manager position. And now you’re portraying yourself as some savior? I think your skin is so thick even bullets couldn’t pierce your face.”
Su Ci suddenly realized her own skin wasn’t thick at all. In front of her, this shameless middle-aged couple were truly the kings of thick skin.
Lu Zhe glanced lightly at the girl beside him. At this moment, her eyes were bright — like a rabbit baring its claws, adorably fierce as it attacked the bad guys.
The middle-aged couple had never encountered a girl so meticulous and sharp-tongued. They could say ten sentences, and she could use just one to choke them speechless — leaving them furious yet unable to refute.
The female staff member spoke. “Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, because your intentions in adopting the child are improper, you cannot take the child with you.” Now that their goal was clear, the child absolutely could not leave with them.
The middle-aged man still refused to give up. “Are you sure? If you miss out on us, do you think anyone else will be willing to adopt a child with a heart condition?”
“That’s not something Mr. Zhang needs to worry about.” The female staff member wasn’t stupid. Even if the child stayed in the orphanage, it was still better than falling into a wolf’s den.
“Hmph.” The middle-aged woman snorted angrily. She knew that she and her husband’s wishful plan had failed, so there was no need to hide anymore. “Did you really think I wanted to raise a useless sick brat? So what if we don’t take him? What’s the big deal.”
As she spoke, she pulled her husband to leave.
“Do you know why you two haven’t had a child after so long?”
Su Ci’s words successfully stopped the couple in their tracks.
When the middle-aged couple turned their gazes toward her, her red lips lifted as she let out a cold sneer. “Because you two lack virtue.”
“What did you say?” The middle-aged man’s expression instantly turned vicious. Their inability to have children was their fatal weak point. Being called out like that made him explode.
Lu Zhe stepped protectively in front of the girl, his pitch-black eyes meeting the man’s coldly. “Planning to hit someone?”
The youth was tall, his face expressionless, half a head taller than the middle-aged man.
Facing the boy’s dark eyes, the middle-aged man’s momentum instantly weakened. “I can’t be bothered with you.”
The two turned around to leave. But after just a few steps, they spotted Zhen Tiancai hiding behind a large green plant.
Facing the child’s bright, innocent eyes, the middle-aged couple finally felt a faint sense of discomfort.
“It’s not that we don’t want to adopt you. It’s the orphanage that won’t allow it.”
The middle-aged woman felt a bit guilty under the child’s pure gaze.
Zhen Tiancai was still holding the toy bear the middle-aged man had casually stuffed into his arms. He looked at the couple and said, “I’m not afraid of pain. I can donate blood to save someone.”
Su Ci looked over in astonishment. The little guy had heard everything?
“I can save someone.” He was sick himself and hoped someone would save him. Now, hearing that a little girl was sick and only he could save her, Little Tiancai felt he wasn’t afraid of pain — he could save her.
“Are you serious?” The middle-aged man thought his plan had failed, but he didn’t expect the child to volunteer.
“Mm, I’m willing to save someone.”
The child’s voice was tender, but his words were firm.
Su Ci instinctively looked at Lu Zhe. She seemed to see Lu Zhe’s childhood self — quiet, cold on the outside, yet possessing a pure and burning heart.
Su Ci took out her phone and directly asked the middle-aged man, “What’s your boss’s phone number?”
“What are you going to do?” The middle-aged man was already afraid of this sharp-tongued girl.
“Just give it to me. Stop talking nonsense.”
Su Ci’s gaze was cold. “If you don’t give it, I’ll upload your recording online and let the whole country curse you.”
“You—” The middle-aged man was so furious that bloodshot veins appeared in his eyes. With his weakness caught in her hands, he had no choice but to compromise.
After Su Ci obtained the contact information, she let out a cold snort. “You can get lost now.”
She noticed Little Tiancai’s eyes dimming.
She walked over. “You’re still young. Even if you want to save someone, you have to get the doctor’s approval first. Only after the doctor examines you and decides you can donate blood can you save someone, understand?”
Little Tiancai nodded obediently.
“Miss Su, are you really going to let him save someone?” the female staff member asked.
