Su Ci took out her phone and typed the rabbit’s behavior into the search bar. The results that popped up made her hand tremble slightly.
Rabbit… in heat?
Su Ci clicked into a post about rabbits. It said that although rabbits looked innocent and pure on the outside, rabbits were actually big perverts—little lechers.
Su Ci’s mood instantly became complicated.
She quickly scrolled down and learned that rabbits had a heat period! They usually experienced their first at around 3–4 months, and the smaller the rabbit, the earlier it started. Larger rabbits usually experienced it at 5–6 months.
Su Ci looked at the rabbit in the enclosure. This rabbit should be about the size of a 5–6-month-old.
Su Ci remembered that when she had still been a rabbit, her body had only been palm-sized. She belonged to a dwarf rabbit breed. Even if she returned to rabbit form, no matter how she grew, she would still be small.
Su Ci licked her lips, thinking seriously—if she were still a rabbit, wouldn’t that mean she would enter this so-called shameful period at around three months old?
Su Ci was shocked and frightened, yet also secretly relieved that she was now human and not a rabbit.
“Pretty sister, is bunny sick?” the little girl asked worriedly.
Facing the little girl’s pure, bright eyes, Su Ci couldn’t bring herself to say the rabbit wasn’t sick—it was in heat.
Just then, Lu Zhe suddenly appeared beside her. “What are you talking about?” His gaze inadvertently landed on her phone screen, where the search results for a rabbit’s heat period were still displayed.
“Brother Lu Zhe, bunny is sick,” the little girl told him.
Su Ci put her phone away and nodded. “Yes, this rabbit has lovesickness. Go tell the staff and see what they should do.”
The little girl’s eyes lit up. She volunteered eagerly, “Tutu will go tell the caretaker sister.” Saying that, she happily ran off.
“Why did you come out? Did you finish what you were doing?” Su Ci asked Lu Zhe.
“No. I came to bring you water.” Lu Zhe twisted open a bottle of mineral water and handed it to her.
Only then did Su Ci realize she was indeed thirsty. She drank several gulps before passing the bottle back to him. “Go ahead and get back to work. I can stay by myself.”
Lu Zhe glanced at her, a little surprised that she was being so obedient.
But the next second, the corners of the girl’s eyes hooked up. She leaned close to his ear and said, “Lu Zhe, am I super considerate?”
Su Ci’s lips were so close they were almost touching his ear. “When we get back home, you have to kiss me properly.” Knowing he was in a bad mood, she had been a well-behaved, thoughtful little angel these two days.
Lu Zhe shot her a faint sideways glance and walked away.
Su Ci pressed her lips together. Did that mean he agreed? Or not?
Standing under the shade, Su Ci boredly watched the rabbit in the enclosure. The more she looked, the more frightening a rabbit in heat seemed. It was jumping around crazily, running, kicking—was this frustration from unmet desire?
At that moment, a white car stopped outside the orphanage gates. The children playing in the yard all stopped and looked over curiously.
One boy said excitedly, “It must be Zhen Tiancai’s new dad and mom coming to pick him up!”
“Call Zhen Tiancai out!”
“I’ll go tell Sister Yinzi that Zhen Tiancai’s new dad and mom are here!”
The children were thrilled. In their eyes, having parents was something joyful and happy. They were all happy for Zhen Tiancai.
Su Ci looked toward the gate and saw a middle-aged man and woman get out of the car.
The middle-aged man wore a loose, ill-fitting suit. The middle-aged woman beside him wore a dress with large floral prints.
A female staff member—whom the children called Sister Yinzi—quickly went up to greet them. “Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, welcome.” The old dean had scheduled their visit today, though unexpectedly he was no longer here.
“We’re here to pick up the child, Tiancai,” the middle-aged man said with a smile.
Several little children shyly hid behind Sister Yinzi. When someone saw Zhen Tiancai coming out from inside, they shouted happily, “Zhen Tiancai is out! Zhen Tiancai is out!”
Su Ci looked over and immediately saw Zhen Tiancai walking out of the corridor. The little guy was dressed in a new outfit. Even though his little face was stiff, his bright black eyes couldn’t hide the joy within.
The little guy was very happy that someone was willing to adopt him.
He finally had a dad and mom.
“Aiyo, this must be Tiancai. Come, come to Auntie. From now on, I’ll be your mom.” The middle-aged woman’s voice was loud, perhaps because she was excited to see the child.
Zhen Tiancai was shy and timid. He secretly looked at the female staff member. After receiving her encouraging nod, he walked over to the middle-aged woman.
Su Ci saw the little guy’s small hands tucked nervously behind his back. He was clearly very tense.
The middle-aged man looked at Zhen Tiancai with a big grin. He shoved a teddy bear into the boy’s arms casually. “From now on I’m your dad, and she’s your mom. When you come to our home, you must be obedient, understand?”
Zhen Tiancai hugged the teddy bear, nodding blankly.
“Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, you can talk to the child for a bit first. I still need to arrange some documents. I’ll need your signatures later,” the staff member said.
She was smiling. She was truly happy when a child from the orphanage was chosen for adoption.
“Alright, go ahead. We’ll talk to the kid,” the middle-aged man said cheerfully.
After the staff member left, the children peeked at the two strangers. Shy, they slowly scattered, running a little farther away while sneaking glances. Everyone was envious that Zhen Tiancai had parents now.
Su Ci stood idly in front of the fence, watching the couple interact with Zhen Tiancai. She instinctively narrowed her eyes.
She had lived in the entertainment industry. When it came to reading expression control and acting, she could tell.
The couple’s smiles were perfunctory—especially the middle-aged woman. Once the staff member left, she checked her watch three times, looking impatient. There was none of the joy of people welcoming a new child.
The middle-aged man was saying something to Zhen Tiancai, then his wife tugged him away.
Su Ci frowned. She glanced at the little boy, then followed quietly.
She hid behind the greenery at the corner.
“Didn’t you say this kid has a good temperament? Why is it that when I talk to him, he doesn’t even let out a fart? Not a single sound. Does he have something like autism?” the middle-aged woman said with clear dissatisfaction.
The man tried to calm her. “No. I asked. He only has a heart condition. There shouldn’t be anything wrong mentally. Kids get shy. It’s normal for them not to talk.”
“Having a heart condition isn’t enough of a problem?” the woman snapped. “If it weren’t for your stupid idea—that we should adopt him to please your boss so you can get promoted—I would never raise a sick, useless child.”
“You only know that my boss’s daughter has leukemia and that her blood type is panda blood. This kid just happens to also have panda blood (Rh-null or very rare Rh-negative blood).”
The man continued coaxing her. “Once we take him back, I’ll tell my boss. I’ll offer this son to him as a mobile blood bank for his daughter. He’ll definitely value me. In exchange, I want the general manager position. He’ll agree for sure. Stop worrying about the kid’s personality. It’s not like you’ll have to carefully take care of him every day.”
“Don’t forget he has a heart condition. I’m just worried he’ll become a big burden in the future,” the woman said, but his words had eased her attitude.
“You also know he has a heart condition. If something really happens to him—well, we’re not doctors. Are we supposed to save him?” The man patted her hand. “Don’t overthink it. Just follow the plan. Once I become general manager, you can comfortably be the general manager’s wife.”
That sentence hit the woman’s soft spot. She finally smiled.
“Come on, let’s go coax the kid. Don’t scare him,” the man reminded her.
The woman glared at him. “I know, okay? You think I’m stupid?”
“You’re not stupid—you’re vicious.”
From around the corner, Su Ci stepped out. Her black eyes were icy as they fixed on the couple, rare anger flickering deep within them.
The middle-aged woman jumped, startled by Su Ci’s sudden appearance. She immediately snapped, “Y–You… who are you? What are you doing here?”
Su Ci curled her lips in a cold sneer. “Don’t speak so loudly. You’ll scare the children. And raising your voice won’t hide your guilty conscience.”
“Little girl, you must be joking. What would we be guilty about?” The middle-aged man was clearly calmer than his wife. His tone held a hint of testing—he wasn’t sure whether she had overheard their conversation.
Su Ci lifted her chin slightly. “Your intentions are rotten. You’re adopting Zhen Tiancai so he can treat your boss’s daughter.”
She didn’t bother beating around the bush. No riddles. She stated openly that she had heard everything.
The middle-aged woman stared at her husband in shock. They were caught.
The man gripped his wife’s hand tightly, signaling her to stay calm. “Young lady, there are jokes you shouldn’t make carelessly. My wife and I have no children. We took a liking to Zhen Tiancai and wanted to adopt him so he could leave the orphanage and live a good life. If you slander us like this, the child might lose his chance to be adopted.”
Hearing this, the woman’s panic immediately settled.
Right—this girl had no evidence. No one would believe her.
“That child has a heart condition. If it weren’t for us being kind, truly compassionate, no one would adopt a child with an illness.”
The middle-aged woman straightened her back. “Didn’t you see how happy he was knowing we were his parents? He’ll become our son and won’t have to worry about living a good life. So don’t mess around, little girl. Don’t ruin his chance for nothing.”
Su Ci couldn’t stop her eyes from rolling. This was the first time she’d met people this shameless, brazen, and black-hearted.
She questioned coldly, “Living a happy life with you? You mean down below?”
Her voice was icy. “Zhen Tiancai is only five years old, and he has a heart condition. Your hearts must be rotten to the core to plot something this filthy against a child.”
She stared at the couple. “You’re trying to kill him.”
To Su Ci, this couple was vile and disgusting.
She glanced at the life values above their heads.
The man had a little more than thirty years left.
The woman had more than forty.
They looked roughly in their thirties, meaning the man would live to sixty-plus, the woman to seventy-plus.
Su Ci asked Fuguì in irritation, “Why do such horrible people get such long lives?”
Fuguì: 【Master, lifespan is decided by the heavens. Fuguì doesn’t know either.】
Su Ci: “Is there any way to reduce their lifespan a little?”
She was genuinely furious.
Sensing her anger, Fuguì shrank back as much as possible and replied in a tiny voice:
【Master, this is determined by the heavens.】
Su Ci pressed her lips together. She’d only been asking, but hearing the answer still made her annoyed. So it was true—the wicked lived long.
The couple, stung by Su Ci’s cutting words, looked ugly and were about to retort when the female staff member returned with Lu Zhe.
The staff member sensed the tension in the air between Su Ci and the middle-aged couple. Confused, she looked among them.
“Mr. Zhang, Mrs. Zhang, the documents are ready. Please sign the adoption papers.” The female staff member handed the documents to the couple.
“Alright, alright.” The middle-aged man reached out with a cheerful smile to take them—
the next second, a fair, delicate hand suddenly reached out and snatched the papers away.
Su Ci said coldly, “Heh, you really dare to sign!”
“Miss Su?” The staff member looked at Su Ci in confusion.
Lu Zhe walked to Su Ci’s side. “What happened?”
Under everyone’s gaze, the Su Ci who had been cold-faced and full of fierce momentum a second ago instantly switched expressions.
Her eyes shimmered as she looked at the boy beside her, pitifully saying, “Lu Zhe, these two bullied me!”
