Damp, like the wet scent of rainwater on a barren wilderness (Part 1)

Wang Luan’s performance at the banquet was soon reported to the ears of the Wang family head. Over the years, because he had only given birth to an Alpha daughter with a C-grade level, he had heard no shortage of gossip and insinuations.
By now he had long since given up any expectations of Wang Luan, and cared even less about whether she had embarrassed herself outside. The only thing he cared about was whether Wang Luan could successfully unite with Yan Qiongyu.
3S-grade Omegas were extremely rare. In the Thorn Empire, only four had appeared in the past hundred years, the previous one being Yan Qiongyu’s mother.
Therefore, many people were vying for Yan Qiongyu—this was something the Wang family head knew very well. He did not take the others seriously, but when it came to the several princes and princesses who had shown interest in Yan Qiongyu, he had not been confident back then that he could compete with them.
What he had not expected was that the marriage proposal he put forward at the time was approved by His Majesty. His Majesty had no intention of pairing this high-level Omega with any of his own children.
Regarding this, the Wang family head had a bit of a conjecture in his heart.
Although the matter of Yan Qiongyu’s mother, Yan Mu, had been very tightly concealed back then, people like them had still heard some rumors.
If things were truly as he suspected, then the princes and princesses indeed would not be very likely to become Yan Qiongyu’s marriage partners. The only one who posed a bit of trouble was the Fifth Prince—his temperament was explosive, and once his temper flared, he acted without regard for consequences. He was not nearly as easy to deal with as the Seventh Princess.
At present, the Fifth Prince was stationed with the legion and did not yet know about this matter. When he returned after some time, there would likely be further complications. In the past two years, relying on his high aptitude and leading the legion to suppress rebellious forces causing trouble on various planets, his temper had grown more and more explosive by the day; he was even unwilling to fully comply with His Majesty’s orders.
To avoid trouble dragging on too long, the Wang family head felt it necessary to hasten the marking between his daughter and Yan Qiongyu. Once the complete marking was done, even if the Fifth Prince wanted to snatch him away, there would be nothing he could do.
He summoned the butler and instructed him, “At their next meeting, have Wang Luan attempt an initial marking on Yan Qiongyu.”
An Alpha’s marking of an Omega involves injecting their own glandular fluid into the Omega’s nape gland through overgrown sharp teeth. This process is painful, with the degree of pain varying from person to person.
If an AO pair has a high compatibility, similar levels, and mutual affection, and the Omega’s level of acceptance is high, then there is virtually no sensation of pain.
On the contrary, if compatibility is low, the level gap too large, and there is no affection between them or there is rejection, then the marking behavior will be extremely painful, and rejection reactions may even occur. If the rejection reaction is too severe, the fragile Omega may even die.
Yet only after a complete marking does an Omega fully mature, able to open the cavity and bear children.
Therefore, having Wang Luan carry out the complete marking was inevitable. It was just that, given the current state between the two of them, they could only attempt the marking multiple times in small amounts; otherwise, attempting to complete it in a single go would most likely result in failure.
“Go inform Wang Luan to prepare,” the Wang family head said, rubbing his forehead gloomily.
If it were not for the fact that in recent years his genetic defect had grown increasingly severe, to the point that he could no longer allow an Omega to give birth to healthy children, he would have found a way to mark Yan Qiongyu himself. How would it have been that useless daughter’s turn to be so unwilling here?
Upon receiving the marking notice, Wang Luan was no different from a cat discovering it was about to be neutered—thunderstruck on a clear day, devastated beyond measure. If not for her love of life, she would have left this world on the spot.
Two male servants stood guard at the door at all times, and once outside the school gates there were ten bodyguards waiting. There was no way to run.
The more anxious Wang Luan felt, the less she liked to talk. She immersed herself in the mecha model workshop, dismantling mecha models and assembling them again.
Dusk quietly descended. After dinner, the butler came to invite her out to “go on a date” with Yan Qiongyu. Wang Luan not only did not go out, she even used the locks she had assembled over the past two days to lock the workshop door, locking herself inside.
Although she knew resistance was useless, she would still struggle for the time being—if she could delay even for a moment, then so be it.
The butler first spoke gently at the door to persuade her for a few sentences. Seeing that Wang Luan did not respond, his voice then stopped, and outside the door there was suddenly no sound at all, utterly quiet.
Wang Luan thought they would immediately send someone to force their way in. Instead, after waiting for an hour, she even began to wonder whether they had given up for the day, when suddenly there was a disturbance at the doorway.
After a series of sizzling sounds, the door to her workshop was burned straight through with a hole. All three door locks were directly melted by the armed bodyguards outside.
The butler politely pushed the door open and said to her kindly, “Since Miss Luan does not wish to go out, then the marking will be carried out here.”
He stepped back, revealing Yan Qiongyu standing behind him. They had delivered the person straight to her.
“Then I won’t disturb you two,” the butler said before leaving. Standing by the doorway, he reminded Wang Luan, “Miss Luan, if you make too much of a fuss, the family head will be angry. When that happens, I’m afraid Miss Luan will only suffer even more.”
The door that had already become a mere decoration was closed again.
Wang Luan knew that the butler had left, but there were still plenty of people outside watching her.
Only the two of them remained in the room. After a brief silence, Yan Qiongyu moved. He did not approach Wang Luan, who was sitting on the workbench, but instead walked toward a shelf to the side, looking at the mecha models on it one by one.
Mecha models were different from combat mecha—there was a complete difference between toys and weapons. The mecha models in front of him were fairly delicate, and it was clear that their maker had put a great deal of care into them, but with the limitations of ability, the finished products could only be said to be passable.
Omegas did not have the qualifications to pilot mecha, but Yan Qiongyu had once found an opportunity to get hold of a combat mecha. Mecha models were simply not impressive to him.
With his back to Wang Luan, he nevertheless praised her: “Were these made by Miss Wang Luan? They’re very good mecha models. Miss Wang Luan is far more outstanding than what outsiders say.”
Wang Luan said nothing.
Those mecha on the shelf were not made by her—they were made by the original owner of the body. Over the past few days she had also been trying to make mecha models herself, but had only completed half of one, which she was holding in her hands.
After looking over the boring, unoriginal mecha models, Yan Qiongyu approached the workbench with a look of sincere admiration on his face. With one hand braced against the workbench, he looked at the mecha model in Wang Luan’s hands.
“The model in Miss Wang Luan’s hands is far more interesting than the others here.” This remark was truly from the heart.
Wang Luan herself had noticed it as well. After inheriting the original owner’s memories of mecha model construction, her way of thinking about making mecha models was much clearer than the original owner’s. She guessed this had something to do with so-called “mental power”—her mental power was very likely different from the original owner’s.
The original owner’s mental power had also been C-grade, insufficient to bear the complex structural calculations involved in mecha construction, whereas she found it very easy.
However, right now Wang Luan did not want to discuss things like mecha models with Yan Qiongyu.
She set down the half-finished piece in her hands, looked straight at Yan Qiongyu’s beautiful, gentle face, and told him, “I won’t mark you.”
They had met twice, and it had only been three days since their last meeting. Wang Luan was a reasonable person. She could not accept Yan Qiongyu’s body, but she had no objections to him as a person.
