“Why are you so awful when you talk?” Shen Xue wiped a handful of tears, glaring fiercely at Su Ci.
The sunlight on the rooftop was especially scorching. There wasn’t even a bit of wind, and Su Ci felt like she was dying from the heat.
She said irritably, “Honest words are unpleasant. Everything I said is the truth. It’s just Fu Baili. There are plenty of people who look better than him. Is he really worth dying for? He probably doesn’t even know your name.”
In the book, after the cannon-fodder female supporting character died, the male lead Fu Baili didn’t even bother to find out the name of the girl who died for him.
Wasn’t that dying for nothing?
She had heard of many people who sought death for love. She always found it unbelievable, thinking those people were foolish and pitiful.
Shen Xue standing before her was the same type — love-brained. There was a whole forest out there, yet she insisted on crashing into a tree that wasn’t even that good-looking. Was she stupid or what?
Su Ci glanced at the hands gripping the railing. The life value on Shen Xue’s wrist had already turned into yellow squares. Although she couldn’t see how much life was left, since it was no longer a red line, she knew Shen Xue wouldn’t jump anymore.
“You’re still not coming down?” Su Ci asked her. “School’s about to end. I’m going to look for Lu Zhe.”
The other party didn’t want to die anymore, so she wasn’t going to waste her time here.
Seeing Su Ci really turn to leave, Shen Xue hurriedly shouted, “Ah, ah, ah, don’t go! Aren’t you afraid I’ll actually jump?”
Su Ci was speechless. “No.”
Shen Xue was dumbfounded. The other girl really was walking off, completely ignoring her.
“Wait, wait!” Shen Xue quickly called out.
Su Ci turned back, frowned at her. “You still need something?” The class bell had just rung, and she was in a hurry to find Lu Zhe.
Shen Xue bit her lip. Her eyes were red, her face was red, full of shame. “My legs are weak… can you come help me down?”
A moment ago, when she was set on dying, she didn’t feel anything. But now, sitting on the railing and looking down, she finally realized she was basically hanging in midair — it was terrifying.
Her legs were trembling.
Su Ci stared at her in disbelief. “Just now I thought you weren’t even afraid of dying. I was about to praise you for being impressive.” She didn’t expect her to be this cowardly now. Where did she even get the courage to climb up here to jump?
Su Ci held up her umbrella and walked over, extending her hand to Shen Xue. “Hurry and come down. I’m in a rush.”
Shen Xue, who had failed to die and was now drowning in shame, grabbed Su Ci’s hand and slowly climbed down from the railing.
When she landed, her legs were still trembling a little.
The thrill of seeking death had passed. Now Shen Xue felt only lingering fear. If not for Su Ci’s persuasion, she really would have jumped.
“Thank you.” No matter how proud she usually was, at a moment like this, she was filled with gratitude toward the girl in front of her. The other had saved her.
Su Ci looked at her, the corner of her eye lifting slightly as she smiled. “I just saved your life, didn’t I?”
Shen Xue nodded.
“A life-saving grace should be repaid with all one’s effort — that’s correct, right?” Su Ci asked.
Shen Xue nodded again.
Su Ci considered herself someone who expected repayment for kindness. Now that she was Shen Xue’s savior, she narrowed her eyes happily. “Since that’s the case, you owe me a favor.”
Seeing Shen Xue’s stunned expression, Su Ci’s gaze turned dangerously sharp. “You don’t want to acknowledge it?”
“No, I know. I understand,” Shen Xue quickly said.
“Add me as a friend.” Su Ci took out her phone.
Shen Xue added her. She looked at Su Ci’s profile picture — a selfie. Very beautiful, though the real person was even more stunning. Even someone like Shen Xue, who always thought highly of her own looks, had to admit defeat in front of such top-tier beauty.
“Alright, I’m leaving. If I need help, I’ll contact you.” No idea if Lu Zhe had already left school.
Su Ci appeared suddenly and left just as suddenly. Before Shen Xue could say anything more, the hem of her flowing dress had already disappeared at the stairway.
Su Ci called Lu Zhe. When she learned he had already left the school, she told him to wait for her at the mouth of the alley.
“Lu Zhe, I’m so tired.” When Su Ci saw him, she immediately handed him the umbrella and leaned against him as if she had no bones.
“Why did you come?” Lu Zhe held the umbrella with one hand, letting her cling to him with the other.
Su Ci said as if it were only natural, “To pick you up from school and keep you company at work.”
Lu Zhe tilted the umbrella toward the girl, blocking out all the sunlight.
“Lu Zhe, did something happen in your class today?” Su Ci began eating melon. Zhao Youyou had definitely clashed with Shen Xue today. Fu Baili must have sided with Zhao Youyou, and then Shen Xue was provoked into attempting to jump.
Lu Zhe glanced at her. “I don’t know.”
Lu Zhe never paid attention to things happening around him.
Su Ci didn’t keep pressing. “I saved a girl who was going to jump off the roof at your school today. If I hadn’t shown up, she would’ve really died.”
Lu Zhe listened quietly. She always seemed to run into these kinds of things, then end up saving people.
“I know, a beautiful and kind girl like me is basically an angel.” Su Ci bragged without the slightest hesitation. “But I don’t want to be an angel. Angels have to save the world.”
She was very selfish.
The girl’s brows lightly knitted. Lu Zhe looked at her and spoke in a low voice, “You only need to be yourself.”
Su Ci nodded, then shook her head.
Her eyes tilted up at the corners. With bright, sparkling eyes, she looked at Lu Zhe and said with a smiling gaze, “No, I want to be your little angel.”
She didn’t like being the kind of angel who saved others, but she was willing to be Lu Zhe’s angel.
Lu Zhe didn’t respond.
Su Ci tugged his arm. “I’ll give you something good.” She had just saved Shen Xue and gotten a new golden cotton candy.
“Hm?” Lu Zhe lowered his eyes, seeing the girl’s bright black pupils with that familiar mischievous glint hidden inside.
He had a bad premonition.
Sure enough, he heard her say, “If you kiss me, I’ll give it to you.”
Su Ci calculated the time. The three kisses from the orphanage two nights ago were about to expire.
“Wait until we get back.”
Su Ci ignored him. She dragged him into the alley, her face full of anticipation. “I’ve never tried kissing in an alley. I want to try.”
To Su Ci, kissing in different settings was a kind of fun.
This alley didn’t have many people passing by. Su Ci pulled Lu Zhe to the middle between the two walls, just enough for them to stand there.
Her eyes lifted at the corners, overflowing with laughter. She loved seeing Lu Zhe’s helpless yet indulgent expression. “You don’t want it? If you don’t want it, I’ll give it to someone else.” Fugui liked golden cotton candy a lot.
Hearing the girl say she’d kiss someone else, Lu Zhe’s gaze darkened.
He looked at her deeply, then pressed her against the wall.
With one hand placed behind the back of Su Ci’s head, Lu Zhe met her bright black eyes. He let out a low sigh, and his cool, thin lips fell onto hers, incomparably gentle.
The girl’s soft, sweet scent was enough to take a life.
Lu Zhe’s hand holding the umbrella tightened. He tilted the umbrella to the side, shielding both his and Su Ci’s bodies.
When passersby walked past, all they could see was the umbrella — and beneath it, only the feet of a girl and a boy.
The sunset, embarrassed, slipped away.
When they walked out of the alley—
Su Ci’s dark eyes were even brighter. Even if they had only kissed lightly twice, this time Lu Zhe had taken the initiative. She was in an exceptionally good mood. If Lu Zhe could take the initiative from now on, she wouldn’t need to rack her brains thinking of ways to beg for kisses.
“Lu Zhe, we’ve kissed so many times. How come your kissing skills haven’t improved at all?” Su Ci was the perfect example of taking advantage yet still acting spoiled.
Every time Lu Zhe and Su Ci kissed, it was always brief and restrained. Forget technique — they hadn’t even reached the stage of exchanging saliva. Su Ci was just teasing the boy on purpose.
Lu Zhe’s pitch-black eyes swept over her quietly. He pushed open the door and walked into the shop.
Su Ci followed behind him, her fair little face filled with smug delight.
Inside the computer shop, Little Kuaile brightened the moment he saw Su Ci. His round, dark eyes lit up instantly. “Sister Ci!”
“Xiao Ci is here too,” Boss Fang said with a smile.
“I’m here to keep Lu Zhe company while he watches the shop,” Su Ci replied.
Boss Fang gave Lu Zhe a meaningful look, both happy for him and also a little sympathetic.
“Sister Ci, I’m going to have feet tomorrow!” Little Kuaile couldn’t wait to share his exciting news.
His dad told him that tomorrow he could finally get his new pair of prosthetic legs, and then he would be able to walk and go to school like other children.
Su Ci blinked, then reached out to pat Little Kuaile’s head. “That’s amazing! Once you can walk, I’ll take you to the amusement park.”
