Rain kept falling from outside the window, splashing onto the desk. The cardboard box placed on the tabletop had already been dampened by the rain.
A tiny ball of snow climbed along the edge of the box, struggling to jump out. Because she used too much force, she lost control for a moment — the snowball shot off the desk and plummeted toward the floor.
Su Ci shut her eyes in panic, her whole body tensing up.
The next second, no pain came. Instead, she fell into a cold embrace.
Su Ci slowly opened her eyes. A handsome young face had enlarged right before her.
He had no expression, his hair soaked by the rain. Water droplets slid down along his bangs, tracing across his hard, cold profile, then dripping slowly from his chin. His pitch-black eyes were still and lightless, bottomless, making one afraid to look directly at them.
Su Ci blinked. He was back.
Lu Zhe lowered his gaze, glanced at the white ball of rabbit fur in his palm, then placed it onto his bed.
The room was rather small. The bed was a single, covered with a grayish sheet. Su Ci lay obediently on the bed, not daring to move, fearful that she might be stuffed back into that tiny cardboard box at any moment.
It had already been three days since she crossed over. She had been forced to accept that she had turned into a rabbit — and a palm-sized baby rabbit at that. On the day she arrived, she was picked up by the young man before her, Lu Zhe.
Su Ci lifted her little rabbit head, looking at Lu Zhe with a complicated expression.
She remembered that Lu Zhe was the female lead’s older brother in the book — a male cannon fodder character who only appeared a few times.
One time was the explanation of how, before the female lead’s rebirth, she acted recklessly and was abandoned by everyone, yet the supporting male Lu Zhe still protected her, devoted everything to her, even died for her.
Another appearance was after the female lead was reborn, when she began to view this older brother she had always despised in a different light.
Lu Zhe’s final scene was when the female lead stood before his grave, paying respects to him.
Before she had time to sort out her thoughts, Su Ci saw Lu Zhe close the window and begin taking off his wet clothes.
The youth’s figure was tall and slender, shoulders broad and waist narrow.
As he lifted his arms to change clothes, Su Ci clearly saw the thin layer of muscle on his chest — even, powerful, with smooth and beautiful lines. Nothing like the lean frame he appeared to have while clothed.
Even though she had seen many male celebrities and models before, Su Ci had to admit that Lu Zhe’s physique was excellent.
Lu Zhe casually put on a black T-shirt. His already expressionless face looked even more stiff and icy under the dark fabric.
His gaze shifted to the rabbit. Lu Zhe picked up a towel beside him, wrapped the rabbit in it, and began wiping off the rainwater on her body.
The towel wasn’t soft, and the strength in the youth’s hands was strong. Su Ci only felt her head being rubbed by the coarse towel until it was completely uncomfortable.
The rabbit’s snow-white fur was scrubbed until it puffed up, making her look even more like a snowball — adorably dazed. Su Ci kicked her little short legs. Just as she was about to struggle out of the youth’s cold, large palm, the doorbell outside rang.
The door opened.
“Ge… ge.”
The girl standing at the door looked excited, but also somewhat timid. After hesitatingly calling Lu Zhe “ge,” her tone grew much firmer the next time she spoke. “Gege (Brother).”
Zhao Youyou tried hard to suppress the tremble of her heart, filled with excitement.
Thinking of how, in her previous life, she acted wildly and was abandoned by everyone, and only Lu Zhe — the cold, downtrodden older brother she had always despised — appeared to save her, Zhao Youyou couldn’t help the redness gathering in her eyes.
She looked at the youth before her with sincere gratitude. The current Lu Zhe had not died saving her; he was alive and well, standing right in front of her.
How wonderful.
Lu Zhe looked at Zhao Youyou with a faint gaze. “Something wrong?”
All this time, Su Ci—who had been obediently curled up in Lu Zhe’s hand—was seriously studying the excited girl in front of her. Then she realized: this girl was the female lead.
Hearing the female lead call Lu Zhe “gege,” Su Ci confirmed that Zhao Youyou had been reborn. In the book, it was written that after her rebirth, because she felt grateful toward Lu Zhe, she was willing to call him “older brother.”
Zhao Youyou looked at Lu Zhe with reddened eyes.
She had gone to sleep and woken up three years in the past. Thinking of how Lu Zhe had died for her, she rushed over to find him, desperate to confirm this wasn’t a dream.
Facing Lu Zhe’s indifferent gaze, she wanted to say something, but realized she absolutely could not tell him the astonishing truth—that she had been reborn.
Zhao Youyou sniffed. “Gege, have you been doing well lately?” If it were the old her, she would never say such a thing. She would wish for Lu Zhe to stay far, far away from her.
Lu Zhe remained expressionless. His pitch-black eyes held no fluctuation. “Mm.”
Zhao Youyou had once hated this kind of Lu Zhe the most, but the current her no longer did.
For the first time, Zhao Youyou showed him a smile. Then she noticed that Lu Zhe was actually holding a snow-white little rabbit in his hands.
“So cute. Gege, when did you start raising a rabbit?”
Zhao Youyou reached out proactively and scooped the rabbit into her arms. “Gege, this is the birthday gift you prepared for me, right?”
When she checked the calendar earlier, she saw that her birthday was in a few days. The rabbit must be a birthday present from Lu Zhe. Otherwise, with his cold personality, how could he suddenly take in a pet?
Suddenly being held by the female lead and hearing her words, Su Ci was stunned.
She was being given to Zhao Youyou?
Before she could react, sharp pain shot through her body the next second, cutting off all of Su Ci’s thoughts.
Zhao Youyou was pulling out her fur!
Su Ci feared pain the most. Now that she had turned into a rabbit and was having her fur yanked out, her reddened eyes filled instantly with tears.
Holding the rabbit in one hand, Zhao Youyou used the other to stroke it. She said happily to Lu Zhe, “Rabbits are really so cute.” As she spoke, her hand unconsciously pinched a tuft of the rabbit’s fur and pulled it out.
Zhao Youyou had a small habit: whenever she touched something fluffy, she would subconsciously pluck its fur.
Another few strands were pulled out, making Su Ci tremble all over from the pain.
It hurt so much.
No, she absolutely could not go with Zhao Youyou. She would be plucked bald!
Su Ci began to struggle, her four short legs kicking wildly. She looked toward Lu Zhe—she would rather stay by his side eating carrots every day than turn into a bald rabbit.
“Gege, thank you for the birthday gift. Ah, is it trying to bite me?” Zhao Youyou pressed down on the restless rabbit in her hands. “This rabbit is a little fierce. I’ll have to train it when I get home.”
Lu Zhe lowered his gaze. The rabbit in Zhao Youyou’s hands was struggling uneasily, her red eyes seeming to glisten with tears as she stared at him pitifully.
Meeting Lu Zhe’s gaze, Su Ci struggled even harder. Don’t send her to Zhao Youyou!
Lu Zhe’s expression remained faint.
Because she had just returned from rebirth, Zhao Youyou’s emotions were still unstable. Now that she had confirmed Lu Zhe was alive, she let out a breath of relief.
“Gege, you haven’t eaten dinner yet, right? I won’t bother you anymore.” She needed to go home and think carefully about what would happen next. She could not repeat her past mistakes.
The fur on Su Ci’s back was plucked again by Zhao Youyou, and seeing that Zhao Youyou was about to take her away, Su Ci struggled even more fiercely.
“Ah.”
Zhao Youyou’s hand was scratched by a rabbit paw. Startled, she instinctively loosened her grip, and the rabbit fell straight to the floor.
Su Ci hit the ground so hard that pain shot through her whole body.
In a daze, she landed once again in a cold, large hand.
Seeing that Lu Zhe had picked her up, Su Ci didn’t mind at all how icy his hand was. She lightly licked his fingertip, then rubbed her aching little head affectionately against his palm.
Given how obedient and soft she was being right now, please don’t send her away!
“The rabbit didn’t get hurt, right?” The baby rabbit’s paws weren’t sharp. After seeing that her hand wasn’t scratched, Zhao Youyou reached out again, wanting to take the rabbit back.
Su Ci curled herself into a ball, wishing she could burrow straight into Lu Zhe’s chest.
The snowy little bundle in his hand was soft and fluffy. Lu Zhe lowered his eyelids and looked at the fingertip the rabbit had licked — it was slightly damp.
He pushed away Zhao Youyou’s reaching hand.
“Gege?” Zhao Youyou looked at him in confusion.
“I picked up the rabbit. It’s not a gift for you.” As he finished speaking, Lu Zhe felt the rabbit in his palm rub even harder against his hand, obedient to the extreme.
Only then did Zhao Youyou realize she had misunderstood. She didn’t feel embarrassed. “Ah, so you picked it up.”
That was good too. If she didn’t accept gifts from Lu Zhe, it would lessen the ties between them. In her previous life, Lu Zhe had died to save her. In this life, she was grateful to him, but Lu Zhe’s personality was cold and downtrodden, and he even had a terminal illness. She would not come to like him.
Zhao Youyou left.
Su Ci lay on the gray bed, her heart finally settling down.
She had almost become a bald little rabbit!
Su Ci let out an angry snort. Thinking about how Zhao Youyou had plucked her three times—even though she was such a soft and adorable little rabbit—Su Ci no longer cared how the book described the reborn female lead as transformed into someone gentle and intelligent. Her favorability toward this female lead was completely gone.
Outside, the rain grew heavier and heavier, pelting against the window nonstop.
Su Ci lay there listlessly. Thinking about the possibility that she might remain a rabbit for the rest of her life, she didn’t even have the strength left to be angry.
After drinking some water, Lu Zhe picked up the dumbbells in the corner and began training.
Su Ci, lying on the bed, watched the youth do curl after curl. His pace wasn’t fast, even slightly stiff, but the muscles on his arms stood out clearly, tight and solid, as if containing astonishing explosive power.
Su Ci watched quietly. When her gaze fell onto Lu Zhe’s wrist, she noticed a symbol there.
Blinking hard, Su Ci confirmed she wasn’t seeing things.
What was that?
She clearly saw a horizontal bar made of ten small segments on the inside of Lu Zhe’s wrist. Three of the segments were red, and beside it was labeled: 3 years.
【This is life value.】
Suddenly, a soft, milky voice sounded in Su Ci’s mind.
Frightened, she used both her little paws to cover her rabbit head.
Was she hallucinating?
The little milky voice wasn’t worried at all about scaring this timid rabbit to death.
【Each segment represents one year. Lu Zhe’s life value shows three segments, which means he has at most three years left to live.】
Su Ci lifted her rabbit head in shock.
Looking at the young man before her—stern, cold-faced, lifting dumbbells with slow, powerful movements—he only had three years of lifespan?
The male supporting character was truly pitiful.
Then Su Ci heard the little milky voice say:【As long as you kiss Lu Zhe once, he gets one more day of life.】
She understood every individual word, but together, the meaning made no sense. If she kissed Lu Zhe once, he could live one extra day?
Little milky voice:【That’s right.】
Su Ci let out a small snort. Why? Why should his life or death be her responsibility?
【Because he picked you up.】
Su Ci: …
Su Ci did not consider herself a kind person. She was just a rabbit now—she couldn’t even manage her own situation, so how could she possibly take responsibility for someone else’s life? For all she knew, she might die even sooner than Lu Zhe.
Thinking this, Su Ci felt even more uncomfortable. She wasn’t afraid of anything—except becoming ugly, and dying.
Little milky voice:【Additionally, your life is bound to Lu Zhe’s. If he dies, you die too.】
Hearing that, Su Ci’s red eyes grew even redder with anger. She had already turned into a rabbit—wasn’t that miserable enough? Now her life had to be tied to this short-lived male supporting character?
What kind of earthly tragedy was this?!
Little milky voice:【Reward: If you kiss Lu Zhe, you can return to human form.】
As soon as the little voice finished, Su Ci’s red eyes lit up astonishingly bright. Really? Don’t lie to her!
If kissing Lu Zhe could restore her human form, she could kiss his mouth swollen!
Little milky voice:【Fugai never lies.】
Su Ci slowly digested the little voice’s words and soon understood.
So she was the tool person meant to save the male supporting character. In return, Lu Zhe was the tool person that helped her return to human form. And their lives were bound together on top of that.
Knowing there was a way to turn back into a human—that she didn’t have to be a rabbit for the rest of her life—Su Ci’s mood improved instantly. She asked if “Fugai” was the little voice’s name.
【That was the name my previous owner changed me to. Now you are my owner.】
Su Ci realized immediately that this was definitely the golden finger she got after transmigrating.
Feeling delighted, she narrowed her eyes. Fugai was too tacky and lacked taste, so she changed it to another name: Fugui.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when Lu Zhe finally set the dumbbell in his hand down.
Having just finished his training, his arms were engorged with blood, muscles tightened to the extreme. Feeling the muscles twitching again and again, Lu Zhe’s expression didn’t change. He clenched his fist to ease some of the weakness.
Even if he exercised every day, the effect on his illness was minimal.
Lu Zhe put the dumbbell back in the corner and turned around—coming face to face with the rabbit’s pair of bright red eyes.
